Najeon Chilgi - Mother of Pearl inlaid laquerware - is a time-honored representative art form of Korea that has been practiced for over a thousand years. The painstaking process is done completely by hand to create a gleaming surface with stunning illuminated inlaid scenes delicately cut from select pieces of Nacre - pearl oyster or abalone that are designed and prepared using traditional techniques. The traditional technique is complicated and consists of more than 20 steps. It can take 3 to 6 months to complete some of the larger items. The intricately designed pattern of mother-of-pearl is cut and inlaid, and a several layers of lacquer are applied. It is polished to a smooth finish that highlights the shimmering patterns.
