In Korean tradition, Cranes represent good fortune and longevity, and according to Asian folklore, they have a life span of a thousand years. They are important symbols in many cultures because of their beauty and their graceful mating dances.
Najeon Chilgi - Mother of Pearl inlaid laquerware - is a time-honored representative art form of Korea that has been practiced for over a thousand years. The painstaking process is done completely by hand to create a gleaming surface with stunning illuminated inlaid scenes delicately cut from select pieces of Nacre - pearl oyster or abalone, that are designed and prepared using traditional techniques. The natural beauty and iridescent luster of Nacre is highlighted and showcased in the unique one-of-a-kind finished product. Najeon Chilgi is used to decorate and enhance jewelry boxes, desks and bedroom and household furniture.
The traditional technique is complicated and consists of more than 20 steps. It can take 3 to 6 months to complete some of the larger items. Each piece starts with carefully selected local wood that is coated with several layers of natural lacquer made from the juice of the sumac tree. The intricately designed pattern of mother-of-pearl is then cut and inlaid, and a topcoat of additional layers of lacquer is applied. It is ground and polished and the lacquer topcoat is selectively removed to reveal the shimmering patterns.
Please note that the product you receive may have slight color and design variations as each individual jewelry box is inlaid and painted by hand.
