Walter "Blackie" Collins held over 60 patents on knife mechanisms as well as many design patents. He was a member of the Cutlery Hall of Fame, founding member of the Knife Makers Guild, and founding publisher and editor of Blade Magazine and a world renowned knife maker who worked as a designer for all the major knife manufactures including Case and Gerber. While at Gerber, he designed most of the most popular knives made by the firm, including the Gator series and the Gerber Tool. Blackie left Gerber in the mid-1990’s to become a partner in the Meyerco firm.
